Farm Mapping from Aerial Photography

With a good quality ortho-corrected aerial photograph of your farm (available from Wheresmycows.com), a map drawn up using FieldMAP software can be just as accurate as a map created using our Do It Yourself GPS farm mapping kit.

Simply load a digital ortho-corrected aerial photograph into FieldMAP then draw your farm map over the photograph. You can choose to print your map with or without the photograph displayed in the background.

If you have a very large farm to map, but recent photography is not available, you can use a combination of aerial photo and GPS. Draw the majority of your map from the photograph, then use the GPS to superimpose any features that have changed since the photo was flown.

After drawing your farm map, you can print it, or send back to us to create wall maps, tear-off pads or a laser-etched whiteboard.

What you need to draw your map from aerial photography

• Home PC with Windows XP or Vista
• FieldMAP software (view the FieldMAP page)
• Ortho-corrected aerial photograph (available from most aerial photography companies, New Zealand ortho-photos available from us)

To draw your farm map from an aerial photograph, you will need FieldMAP farm mapping software and a digital orhto-corrected aerial photograph. FieldMAP requires that the photograph is georeferenced so that you get an accurate farm map. A georeferenced ortho-corrected aerial photograph is a photo that has had any distortions from lens angles, altitude changes, etc, removed. It also lines up with GPS points automatically, which is how FieldMAP calculates areas and distances, and means the map you create will be future-compatible in case you wish to import or export GPS points into or from the map.
