Professional GPS farm mapping in New Zealand.

An accurate farm map is an important tool for anybody wanting to increase farm productivity and efficency. For feed budgeting and planning fertiliser/seeding/spraying we recommend the Do It Yourself GPS farm mapping kit or Aerial Photography farm mapping kit.

However, if you don't have the time or staff (or children!) on hand to map your own farm, we can do it for you.

Benefits of having Wheresmycows GPS map your farm include:

  • Our GPS equipment is accurate to 2cm, ideal for measuring up and marking out new farm designs.
  • You don't need to spend any time drawing up your farm map, we do it all for you.
  • We can create wall maps, tear-off map pads, and laser-etched whiteboards with your map on them.
  • Every map we do includes our farm mapping software; WMC Map, with your map loaded up on it so that you can edit and print your maps without having to get us back to re-GPS your farm for any small changes you make.
  • We offer straight-up honest advice on the best mapping method for you and your farm. If we think there is no point in going for a more expensive, high accuracy GPS map of your farm we will tell you, and explain the reasons why. Give us a call and judge us yourself!

EM38 Soil Conductivity Surveying

EM soil survey of a Canterbury river block

An EM Map is created by towing a non-invasive electrical conductivity sensor (Geonics EM38) over an area to create a map similar to that displayed on this page which shows relative spatial differences in soil conductivity.

The EM38 measures soil conductivity (EC), which is influenced by:

  • porosity/texture
  • moisture content
  • salinity (very few soils in New Zealand are influenced by this characteristic)
  • bulk density (eg, compaction)
  • other factors including Cation Exchange Capacity and temperature.
In New Zealand, most differences in EC that we see in maps generated by an EM Survey are the result of differences in soil type, moisture content and compaction. With local knowledge of particular areas and some ground-truthing, we can correlate an EM survey findings to other characteristics such as available water-holding capacity (AWC) which allows us to create prescriptions for variable rate irrigation scheduling.
